Continuation of Roman Empire
During the later part of the Roman Empire, it got so big that they had to divide it into two parts and have an emperor for both the eastern empire and the western empire. Shortly after this the Western Empire fell. When Constantine took the rule, he moved the capital from Rome to Byzantium. It was later renamed Constantinople. When the Byzantine Empire accepted Christianity as its main religion, they started setting off from previous Roman traditions.

How the rise of Islam affected the Byzantine empire
The Byzantine Empire adopted Christianity as their religion. The rate at which Islam was growing and all of the land that was being conquered by the Muslims became a threat to the Byzantine empire. In most cases the side with the biggest support base and people who are willing to fight will win and the Islams greatly out weighed the Christians in the Byzantine Empire. Many people believe that the spread of Islam was the beginning of the fall of the Byzantine Empire.

The Fall of the Byzantine Empire
The byzantine empire did not fall all at once. It slowly started to decline but the time frame is debatable. Many believe the rise of Islam is what kick started it. The Crusades attempted to gain some land back and stop the decline, which worked for a little bit. The the Ottomans invaded and this marks the end of the Byzantine empire.
